Inspiration Hop, Day 2: Under the Sea and Enjoy the Journey

Welcome to Day 2 of our Inspiration Hops with the Gina K Designs team! As you hop through their blogs, make sure to leave a comment on each of them because we will choose a few random comments and those stampers will each win a grab bag of deeply etched, pre-cut Gina K. Designs stamps! To see the full list of winners check the Big News forum at Stamp TV a couple of days after the hops.
First up, we have Theresa Momber's new Under the Sea set(available in clear or rubber), perfect for summer! My husband has had marine aquariums as a hobby for over 25 years so he will love all the gorgeous sea life in this set! I decided to use the sea turtles today, don't have any in my collection!
Create a simple, sponged background with Memento Bahama Blue on Pure Luxury White and stamp on the seaweed randomly in Bahama Blue and Bamboo Leaves. Stamping off to get a second shade will create a lot of depth. Add the smaller turtle and a few fish silhouettes. Finally color and cut out this cute turtle! I was looking for some bubbles in the set and then realized a little bling here and there for sparkle would be so much better! "Just keep swimming!"

Come back this week for more samples with Theresa's set. My blog feed is working again, yay!
Next we have Rupa Shevde's Enjoy the Journey (available in clear or rubber), what a great travel set! After staring at all the images and greetings for a few minutes, I decided I wanted to make shaped card, look how simple to make this suitcase....
First, score Pure Luxury Tan Leather cardstock and fold to create a side fold card. cut off about inch of the folded side. This will leave you with a front and back panel that you know you will fit in a envelope. Round the corners with a small corner rounder punch. Then cut the folded part for your handle. Round the corners and cut out the inside in a U shape. Sponge Vintage Photo Distressing ink all over to add depth and bring out the beautiful grain of the leather cardstock.
Open the handle and put a little adhesive at each corner.

Gently fold back together with pressing together, hold the front and back of card together to make sure they are lined up, then pinch the handle closed over the front and back and old for a few seconds to let the glue set.
Now add some little details to finish the case, like piercing the corners with the Scor-Bug and Scor-Buddy, add adhesive nailheads for bling. I also collage stamped the compass to add interest.
Stamp on the globe in black and then stamp again on white CS and color. Cut out the colored image and adhere with pop dots over first image so you can see those lines encircling the globe.
Create tag from leather and white cardstock and stamp greeting.

Please enjoy the rest of the hop, thank you for visiting!

Inspiration Hop, Day 2: Wild About You and Blooming with Blessings

The Design Team for Gina K. Designs welcomes you to another fabulous Inspiration Blog Hop! As you hop through their blogs today, make sure to leave a comment on each of them because we will choose a few random comments and those stampers will each win a grab bag of deeply etched, pre-cut Gina K. Designs stamps! To see the full list of winners check the Big News forum at Stamp TV a couple of days after the hops!

First up, we have the gorgeous safari set "Wild About You" from Theresa Momber. Loving all these animals and silhouettes that so perfectly capture the heart of Africa! Maybe I'll make it there some day, exotic names that roll off the tongue like Kalahari, Congo, and Zanzibar have always captured my imagination, so I'll be making some very inspired sunrises and sunsets with this set in the meantime! TIP: Google "African sunset" to find some gloriously vibrant photos for realistic colors to use and model your cards after!
This card is inspired by a layout and technique tutorial from my book "A Year of Flowers". The torn reverse masked edge is so appropriate for the rugged landscape. Sponged sunset and grass use Wild Honey, Mustard Seed, Barn Door and Black Soot Distressing Inks. TIP: Instead of using a mask to create a hard horizon line, instead I started sponging at the bottom and made strokes upward over and over to crate the illusion of long blowing grass. Card base and elephant are Pure Luxury Moonlit Fog, elephant is popped up to look like he is coming out of the scene.

So easy to color this elephant! Stamp in Memento Tuxedo Black on gray cardstock, then add shadows under the ears, legs and trunk with W-1 and W-5 Copics. TIP: Using Theresa's lines and dots in the image as a guide make it easy to create some wrinkles and folds in the ears with quick strokes of your marker or pencil, starting on the edge and working inward toward the head.

Add a bit of white to the trunk and eyes with an Inkssentials Gel Pen.

Cut out elephant and snip around the ear and pull out slightly to add more dimension before adhering on pop dots. TIP: stamp elephant's feet planted on grass onto white mat, then put cut elephant over it, this way you aren't cutting out the individual blades of grass.

To accompany this card, please bust out your best rendition of one of the most memorable choruses of the 80's, Toto's "Africa"! Altogether now!

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from youuuuuu
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever doooooooo
I bless the rains down in Aaaaaaaaa-fri-caaaaa
I bless the rains down in Aaaaaaaaa-fri-caaaaa
I bless the rains down in Aaaaaaaaa-fri-caaaaa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never haaaaaaaad

(Nothing like 80's music to get you going on a Monday morning!) ;)

Next up, We have Rupa Shevde's Blooming with Blessings, a sweet spring set of animals and sayings! I chose this adorable duck and found a perfect match for the Copic colors and cardstocks I decided on in this Pure Luxury Petals and Wings print.
Here is a closeup of the coloring. Card uses Pure Luxury White, Ocean Mist and Just Peachy for the mats, Lemon Drop for the base, and Wild Dandelion and Creme de Menthe for the tag.
And here are the colors I used for the duck and water, just a couple shades of each color! This is a much cleaner and easier way to indicate the marker numbers, I'm sure you'll agree. (I saw Jeanne Streiff do this on her blog and thought it looked more professional and easier to read (and faster than stamping again and trying to draw the lines myself.) Thanks, Jeanne!)
Splish splash!

Now please check out all the amazing designs and inspiration:

Have a terrific day! More inspiration coming tomorrow, see you soon!

Special Moments

Hello! I finally got around to creating a card with this bitterroot image from Stately Flowers 3 I colored a few weeks ago! I used images online to help me choose the colors, and saw that those tan colored buds would terrific as a really bold pink and brown combo! Base is Gina K Passionate Pink and both DPs are from the Casual Friday pack. I might not have thought of this particular pack at first glance when I'm thinking about "flowers", but when you hold your images next to you papers you'll start seeing colors and similar motifs like the pointy leaves popping out...

Tracing the undersides with a W-3 Copic creates such a realistic shadow! Greeting is from Mehndi Wishes, I thought the sentiment was perfect with the single gorgeous bloom! I added some teensy adhesive rhinestones to the flower center, stamens and o in "Moment" for some sparkle!

Have a terrific weekend! We have family here celebrating little William's 7th birthday oh my, where does the time go! I remember posting about his THIRD birthday just after I started blogging! Talk to you soon, hugs!

Inspiration Hop Day 1: "Stately Flowers 3" and "Mehndi Wishes"

Good morning, welcome to our first day of Inspiration Hops for our new Gina K Designs release1 The first set I am showing today is my new Stately Flowers 3, the third in my Stately Flowers series! (BTW, Theresa told me this is her favorite of the series so far, oh my!) This month I have three new flowers (large and small versions of each) Magnolia, Bitterroot and Forget-me-not, representing the four states Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana and Alaska. I love all the sentiments in this one, too, suitable for so many different occasions!Well, I have lived in Texas all my life, so the first stamp I had to get inky in this set was the Southern Magnolia! There is a huge magnolia tree growing in our neighbor's yard across the street, and if you have never seen these beauties in real life, they are a sight to behold! I would venture to say they are easily one of the "stateliest" flower in the whole series: their blooms with creamy, ivory petals like bisque porcelain are as a wide as a dinner plate! I went to town with my Copics coloring this one! You don't have to do as much shading on these white petals for a show-stopping card, but I wanted to challenge myself, I'd been waiting so long to color this image! :) The flower is stamped in Memento London Fog (no black today, I wanted the outline to be a little more subtle.) Die is a Petite Oval Nestabilities. The photo below shows the colors I used, hope these are helpful! There are so many other combos of green you could use for the leaves, shades for the petals, and pastels for the background, so don't worry about having these exact colors, just a reference of the range of shades and contrasts I used. I will do step by step photos for you soon. Depending on the location of your light source shadows will vary, for this sample I imagined it coming straight down, which cast large shadows onto the lowest petals from those above. BV31 (Pale Lavender) was great for this, and the warm corals and peach shades around the flower really set off the cool shades nicely. I did not use a blender at all, as I like to blend dark colors with my lightest marker, as well as doing tip to tip coloring to create an in between shade.I used the smaller magnolia to stamp a watermarked pattern in Versamark on the Pure Luxury Just Peachy cardstock adding some score lines above and below the greeting, also from this set (don't you love these two fonts together?) I used both the large and small image to create a green pattern on White cardstock with Crushed Olive for one flower and Forest Moss Distressing inks for the other, sponging the edges with same. Card base is Pure Luxury Innocent Pink and mat is All Spruced Up. I also used a Classic Triple Scallop Edgeabilities to cut a border in the sponged mat. Finally, pearls are just the perfect embellishment for these Southern ladies!

Next I want to show a sample I made using the Bitterroot and NO coloring. I'd never seen nor heard of these gorgeous flowers before I started drawing the series. (I would like to know who came up with this name for such a beautiful flower lol! I'm guessing someone tried to eat it way back and when and it was...bitter!) Anyway, the symmetry of this flower is just perfect for stamping patterns, so I stamped the flower again and again re-inking each time, in pink on Pure Luxury Ivory. Next, I scored a diamond pattern at one inch intervals with my Scor-buddy, and then covered two thirds of the mat with scratch paper so I could sponge more of the same pink ink over the left. Pull your scratch paper away, and it looks like you have two layers of perfectly coordinated paper!
I chose this Fancy Tag 2 die , which I thought framed up this new sentiment so beautifully, and sponged pink over the die before removing like a stencil. Well, happy accident, this is the first time I noticed those two little pieces that pop out of the die on top and bottom look like teeny hearts, isn't that just so sweet with the "spread your love..." sentiment, like scattering seeds? So I popped these up on the right corner.

I love finding uses for the perfectly cut negative pieces that come out of Spellbinders dies! Card base is Black Onyx and the "O" in love is embellished with a single adhesive pearl. Seriously minimal card with just two cardstock colors, two inks, one die, and one embellishment (but I really like how it turned out!)

Hope you love this new Stately Flowers 3 set as much as I do!

Our next set is from Rupa Shevde "Mehndi Wishes". I love these designs, they are completely unlike any other stamps I have in my collection, yet I have always been fascinated with the right colors and motifs of India as well the beautiful henna body art that is Mehndi!

I wanted to make a pattern with the gorgeous flourish design and thought this jumping horse was perfect for the sentiment "You can do anything". What a fantastic sentiment and joyful image!
I started by stamping the flourish on Pure Luxury Lipstick Red in Memento Tuxedo Black, turning the stamp back and forth to create a nesting pattern. I used Classic Ric Rac Edgeabilites to cut and emboss a border on the side the side, I thought the dots and diamonds in this die were perfect with the details in these stamps.
Here you can see I finished adding Sakura Gold Glitter pen inside each hole of the cut out and to accent different details in the flourish, just tracing, very simple to do, but it now it looks like gold silk thread in a sari!
I stamped the horse on white and used Copics R59 and R11 for mane and designs and W-5 for the shadows. Don't forget the glitter pen! He's popped up with foam dots and fussy cut, ready to hurdle that greeting! :) Oh, isn't he magnificent?!

Reminds me of some of what I think is the most beautiful writing in the Bible, when God speaks to Job of His creation. It goes on and on for several chapters describing the vast wonders of nature, the weather, etc, but this part of chapter 39 is about the horse (emphasis mine):
19 “Do you give the horse its strength
or clothe its neck with a flowing mane?
20 Do you make it leap like a locust,
striking terror with its proud snorting?
21 It paws fiercely, rejoicing in its strength,
and charges into the fray.
22 It laughs at fear, afraid of nothing;
it does not shy away from the sword.

You can do anything, indeed!

Enjoy hopping with the rest of our Gina K Designs team for more inspiration with these new stamps! As you hop through the blogs, make sure you leave a comment on each of the blogs including mine because we will choose two random winners from all of the comments who will each win a grab bag full of deeply etched, precut Gina K. Designs stamps!

Inspiration Hop, Day 1: "Holiday Basket" and "Under the Weather"

Welcome to day 1 of our Inspiration Hop with the new sets, I hope you had a GREAT time at the release party last night! I am so excited to tell you about my new "Holiday Basket" set! This Longaberger style basket, flower bunches and petite version of three of the flowers and leaf elements from the "A Year of Flowers" set coordinate with "Spring Basket", "Basket Buddies" and "Basket Blessings", you will love mixing all these images! Of course all these new images will fit in the other basket and vice versa. Additionally, these work beautifully with all my other hand drawn nature sets.
The first card I am sharing today uses the basket and bunch of roses. First I stamped the basket, covered it with a mask, and then stamped the roses in Memento Rich Cocoa. Remove the mask and color! three are SO many ways to color this basket, here I created a two tone look to emphasize the warp and weft of the weave (I will be back with step by step Copic photos of how I colored it after our hops, still need to upload the photos) My inspiration was this gorgeous DP from the Basic Grey Curio pack (I tore the edge to add some texture like the curling rose petals). Stamp the handle twice, cut out and attach with brads. Edges are sponged with Antique Linen, Tattered Rose and Vintage Photo Distressing Inks. Cardstock is Pure Luxury White, Ivory, and Black Onyx.
For my next card I wanted to do a quicker one with just two layers and no basket. The flower bunches alone look beautiful inside an embossed frame or die cut. When you stamp or emboss one of the long greetings included in the set underneath it fills up the whole space so elegantly! That's all you need! :)
I traced the embossed border with a Sakura Stardust pen as tracing a few parts of the image to the flowers and added a 3 mm pearl to the center of each.

Finally I have the card I shared yesterday, I realized I didn't give you details about how I made it! Originally I colored the basket and flowers, but then decided I really wanted that pumpkin cardstock I used on the die cut mat to "pop", so I paper pieced over it, stamping it in brown and no shading. I think it looks really rich without any coloring! Flowers and handles are popped up for dimension.
This is a straight greeting, but is long and narrow enough to curve it on the block, isn't that pretty going around the flowers? (When I was bending it, I was thinking I would use it to sort of "suggest" a curved handle, but then I really wanted to use the handles I drew so I added those anyway, hee hee! I'll do another card like that, okay?) Cardstock is Pure Luxury White, Pumpkin Spice, Chocolate Brown, Fresh Asparagus and Wild Dandelion. Come on fall colors, I am so ready for you!) I used my new Classic Petal Edgeabilities for the side which I thought went perfectly with the petals and leave in this image. Tip: Cut a skinny strip of the green cardstock to place behind the dots to add color to your die cut border. This card measures 5 1/2" x 5 1/2". The basket and whatever it's holding is a large image, it works well on A2 cards, but the scale is also lovely for bigger cards like these, I need to make them more often...

Next we have "Under the Weather" by Rupa Shevde, an adorable set of images and greetings perfect for sending get well wishes! I used this little teddy with his arm in a sling and paper pieced his bandages with Echo Park "Walk in the Park" DP.
I added just a touch of shading with Copics B00, B000 and R83 for the ears. I used some scraps of the polka dot paper to make my own "bandage" since I didn't have any coordinating ribbon, and free cut a little heart from Lipstick Red Pure Luxury CS to match the mat. I added a button and hemp (see it, XO?? get it?) and a little heart brad secures the sentiment pennant. Card base is Pure Luxury Bubblegum Pink.

Enjoy hopping with the rest of the team, and don't forget to leave comments all along the way for chances to win a free set of your choice from Gina K Designs, the more comments you leave the more chances you have to win!

Inspiration Hop, Day 2: "Birthday Bash" and "Dreams"

Welcome back to our second day of the May Inspiration Hop with Gina K Designs, I hope you all had a safe and excellent holiday! The first set we have is Rupa Shevde's " Birthday Bash". This blushing bunny with a belated gift behind its back is so "me"! I paper pieced the package to match my mat and used a long length of curled grosgrain ribbon on the side to suggest some very last minute wrapping, most any time I give a gift I wrapped it 90 seconds before I gave it to you and the evidence of that is nearby, hee hee!
Cardstock is Pure Luxury White, Turquoise Sea, Red Hot, and DP is DCWV Citrus. this photo shows the layers I did to build up the dimension. The line art uncolored one is what it die cut with the rectangle. the package, which I added a little red Copic to the ribbon and some gray for a shadow outside the bunny outline, gets glued on next, and finally the front of the bunny is popped up over that.
Next up, we have "Dreams" by Tami Mayberry. I started by inking u the oval frame with Lilac Posies and Grape Jelly Memento markers for a two toned effect. After adding the sentiment and extra butterflies, I die cut it with a Classic Oval and matted it over a Beaded Oval. If you are wondering why it's offset like that, the die slipped when I was cutting and I cut off the right side of the beaded border, oops! I'm telling you, I don't like to redo anything! Make it work! ;)
I could have used some larger butterfly stamps for a background but I wanted them to be dimensional so I decided to go through my die and see what I could make since I don't have any butterfly dies. Looked like this little medallion from a Nestabilities Renaissance Hearts Pendant set ought to do the trick!
I snipped it into quarters, using the top two pieces for the top wings and then snipped one quarter in half to make the bottom wings. The last section I used to embellish a corner. Be sure to round off the sides with your scissors, just following the curve toward the end to make a smooth side. ( I decided not to use that purple one after all..for another project maybe!) :)
I put a strip of three adhesive pearls over the sections to join them in front and then added a strip of Scor-Tape to reinforce it as well as attach it.
I sponged pink and lavender inks onto my mat and then stamped a few tiny butterflies in lavender to the corner. The trail is hand dotted with a black gel pen.
Cardstock is Pure Luxury White, Black Onyx and Lovely Lavender.

Hope these projects inspired! Please enjoy hopping with the rest of our fabulous design team and I hope to see you back here tomorrow!
