Like a Rainbow

Although I uploaded this Pretty Patterns sample to the party and our STV gallery, I hadn't put the full cards on my blog yet, oops! A couple things to point out: the space in between the two chevron on the stamp is exactly wide enough to accommodate the chevron when stamped again, so it works perfectly as a filler for gorgeous seamless color! I love stamping off this way to use it like two step and create more colorful backgrounds in half the time with half the inks!

This rainbow I made with Memento Love Letter, Tangelo, Dandelion, Cottage Ivy, Bahama Blue, so you only need to ink up the chevron one time with each, shift and stamp a second time, clean stamp and move on to the net color.

To balance this design, I chose to make the banner with Pure Luxury Blue Raspberry to bring that bottom color to the top, and in the same way stamped the balloon from Square Pegs (this bold all occasion set works nicely with the Pretty patterns) in Love Letter and stamped again without re-inking to make the pink one, putting these at the bottom. This pulls your eye back and forth and provides a nice contrast.

Tomorrow, a scalloped card and some tips for that!

Also, tip sheet is upcoming. But instead of having everything all together, I believe I will try to do more step outs with these so you can see photos of the individual elements in action! From there, you can take that and incorporate into any design you choose. Love this set! :)

Blast from the Past with Brenda Turner!

Hello!!

Well of course, Brenda is no blast from the past herself, she is found uploading fantastic Gina K Designs creations almost daily in our STV gallery, but it has been some time since she guest designed for me with "Square Pegs" for me, I am very happy to have her sharing some new inspiration for this set today! I love anything with buttons (you know, "cute as a...") and she made this adorable little card with hanging ornaments , using the ornament toppers with the button images instead of the bold or line art circle, so sweet! Branches are from Gina's "Winter Wonderland".

Thanks Brenda for inspiring me, I need to mke a bunch of quick gifts and tags this week and this set will totally help me check off that box! ;)

Shy Bunny

Hello there! On today's "Square Pegs" sample I used Tami's "Happy Hearts" set, kissing the different prints form the patterned inked up hearts onto my solid ovals before stamping to make the eggs, I also masked the little pile with another stamped egg I'd cut out. The little blades of grass are...the whiskers, hee hee! I just love multipurpose stamps, don't you? ;) I cut out and popped up the little pile with the bunny peeking from behind, you can use that same oval mask from the eggs over the bunny face when you add your ears, too!

Card uses Pure Luxury White and Creme de Menthe. I Cuttlebugged a pretty Swiss Dot and added a large bordered to the middle strip to match the green egg. Add a little white paper flower and button from the Romance Collection and the card is complete!

I just love how this card turned out, super sweet with those little patterns! Have a wonderful day!

Eggstra Special

Quickie post today, and more on the party ater, my oldest woke up with a nasty stomach bug . :(

Today's card uses Spring colors and "Square Pegs".
I wanted to put something on this card a little extra special to highlight this "eggstra" greeting in my set, so I decided to stamp two of the bold eggs in pastels, leaving them plain, and then adding the flower border to the third one with some sparkle and pearls to bling it up above the sentiment! I added a large stamped flower to match, punched the flower with the yellow Marvy Extra Jumbo flower punch, layered over the black punched with the blue Super Jumbo flower punch and embossed this large Cuttlebug flower border. Card base is Innocent Pink.

Bunnycake!

Sometimes simple is best. And when you have a little "ha ha wink" moment you make with your stamps, that may be all you need to make your statement! So after assembling this bunny cupcake with the rabbit elements and cupcake from "Square Pegs", I went for simplicity. I cut it out and popped it up on the new Gina K Pure Luxury Innocent Pink (already ordered more of this yummy paper!) and a popped up layer of Black Onyx. That's it!

Sure tickles me when I look at it, maybe I'll make some real cupcakes to match! What do you think?

Final Week with Guest Designer Brenda Turner

Brenda is really going out with a bang in her last week as my Square Pegs Guest Designer with this over the top delicious cupcake jar and matching card! I had never seen these cupcake jars before, so I am so glad she turned me onto this wonderful gift idea! Two cupcakes fit in a half pint jar, so you could make 12 of these from one batch! She then embellished the top with the "Square Pegs" cupcake on some punches, adorned with metal dots (love these those little silver balls, used to be my favorite cookie or cupcake topper, now they are so hard to find!) Matching DP is Basic Grey Nook and Pantry. That spooky border punch she used as ooey gooey dripping chocolate was so inspired LOL! Last I have to point out that sweet Brenda clearly has a lot of my stamps sets (LOL!): the little word window tags she tied on that add so much whimsy to this fun project are all words from a couple more of my most popular stamps sets: "chocolate" and birthday both from "Little Tees" and "happy birthday!" on the card is from "Tech Talk". (Celebrate is from "Square Pegs") Way to mix it up Brenda! You have been a GREAT guest designer!

Guest Designer Brenda Turner

Brenda really surprised me with this fabulous little tic tac toe game she made using "Square Pegs" and "Hip to Be Square" this week, omitting the center lines to split the frame into 9 instead of four squares and then making little button markers!
I love the little pouches she made for the playing pieces (even marking the different x's and O's from that same XO stamp, so cute!) This design could easily be adapted using any of the other images in the Square Pegs (or Hip to Be Square) set: imagine two sets of Easter eggs for an Easter gift for a child, different colored pumpkins for Halloween, or chocolate and vanilla iced cupcakes for a birthday, etc! Brenda's game is a little larger than A2 size, but you could adapt it onto a smaller card front, or even a square one if you wished and put the game piece pouches inside. She's got me really excited about the possibilities!

Making Mischief

Celebrate someone's birthday with a sweet little cupcake ("Square Pegs"), it looks so sweet and innocent...
and then show them all the "trouble" you went through to make it! bwahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I'd been thinking how fun it would be to have these two battling it out in the kitchen but hadn't gotten around to it. I used my Perfect Pattern Pop Up Oven template printed on glossy cardstock and added Theresa's kitten and Mouse from "Purrr-fectly Delightful". I added a flour crock and dials from "Have a Cookie" and upended the jar, sponging Cream White directly onto the floor and countertop, as well as stamping the pawprints. DP is Basic Grey Sugar Rush, I framed up a few little flowers from another print in the pack with the picture frame fom "Tech Talk" and "hung" a couple askew, like they've been all over those counters! ( I know some of you are laughing while others totally have the willies right now!) I didn't mean to use this many sets, but once I started I couldn't stop, ya know? )*

Well. I'm sure you've all heard the saying "when the cats away, the mice do play"? As luck would have it, while I put the finishing touches on this card, I thought my kids were resting in their beds (where I'd sent them after being too rowdy playing when they were supposed to be home from school sick, and they are sick, but apparently not that sick!) but instead they got up and into a bottle of Super Glue my husband left out over the weekend....(dramatic music here) I will never know exactly what happened, as both their stories are very different and fault the other, but my 4 year old's arms were completely covered in glue (looked like long, ropy burn victim scars) and he had a 9 volt battery stuck to his mouth. My older son had it on the tips of his fingers but is still holding out that he was nowhere near the glue. Hmmph. After two hours of bath and scrubbing William threw up in his bed, and I got to change the sheets on his top bunk bed, one of my least fave chores. woo.hoo. It was quite a "sick" day here, let me tell you. Hope your day went better than mine!


*I totally could have gone further and had the cat outnumbered by an army of mice, one half in half out the jar, etc but didn't want to freak anyone out, based on a few release party comments I think there may be some musophobes reading (afraid of mice, had to look that one up!)

"Punchy Bears" Tutorial

Here is one of my favorite cards I made for this release, using a few buttons and the sweet little face and ear stamps from "Square Pegs".
To make these bears you need: a 3/4" circle punch, 1 1/8" circle punch, 1 3/8" circle punch, and a small oval punch (mine is SU!). Stamp the face onto two colors of cardstock. Here I used Sweet Corn and Kraft. Use your 1 1/8" punch to punch out the whole face from one, then use the 3/4" punch to punch out just the nose and mouth from the other piece to create the little snout then pop this up over the nose and mouth on larger face. Stamp and cut out the ears. Punch the body from the largest 1 3/8" punch. Stamp the button image from the Square Pegs set or add a real one for a belly. Punch four small ovals for the limbs, then take some scissors and snip off one end of each oval about 2/3 down, curving your cut, this makes the perfect floppy stuffed arms and legs! Adhere and you're done! Here I made the pair with their arms around each other, awwwww! :) The sentiment from this set is stamped into the little stitched circle tab from the new Stamp TV Kit Organize it.

Last I used the Scor-Bug to pierce some stitched borders around the sides and added faux stitching with my White inkssentials pen. Inside the card I stamped row of the large button image in brown.

Week 2 with Brenda Turner

I squealed when I opened this week's "Square Pegs" sample from Brenda! I love using shapes stamps to create new images, this little shiny ladybug using the solid oval (egg) from the "Square Pegs" set for wings, love how it already has the little highlight! (greeting is from this set too), snipped in half and popped up, and circles from "Hip to Be Square" for the little body reveal and the smaller one for the head and tinier one for the dots, both from "Inspiration Mosaic" (plus the little dot for the spots from the same set!) was just so creative! You get SO much mileage from having all these large and small shapes in your stamp collection, they really open up so many possibilities when you are feeling playful, not just for backgrounds and borders... :) The pierced trail, black brads and dotted DP all tie it together, such sweet little details! Way to think outside the box, Brenda!

Button Tee

Today I have a clean and simple baby card (had to share a more borish one this time!) made with the "Wee Tees" onesie and the button image and sentiment from "Square Pegs". After scoring a large grid onto the Ocean Mist CS, I stamped a button into each to make a coordinating background, added a few real buttons for texture and then mounted everything on Black Onyx and White. I love these colors together, and how that white onesie just pops off the card like soft 100% cotton, so fresh! :)

Gold and Silver Celebration

I actually made this as a New Years card (see the big balloon drop in the background?), before realizing with our release I wouldn't be able to share this "Square Pegs" card until after new years, doh!!!!!!!!! But at least I figured that out before completing the card so I could put celebrate instead and I'll send it out for a birthday or anniversary (or very formal wedding) that works too! The shimmer and colors of this card was really hard to capture without having a funny glare so I took it from the side instead and you don't get all the sparkle but I will tell you about it: instead of white I used the new Gina K Pure Luxury Metallic Mother of Pearl, this is some seriously gorgeous paper! It has the most beautiful iridescent shimmer and golden undertone, and embossing it (D-vine Swirl) just makes those different layers sparkle even more. the balloons were rolled onto metallic Gold and Silver Ink Pads, stamping off some of the balloons to add dimension. Don't those look like real metallic balloons? I added some gold lined black organdy ribbon and silver metallic cording, around both the bow and behind my popped up balloon like a string, i just tucked it under the pop dot to secure the cord. The glasses I stamped (clink!) onto a small die cut Labels Eight and mounted on Pure Luxury Black Onyx. Last I added some adhesive rhinestones a for a little spearkle and fizz bubbly above the glasses.

Guest Designer: Brenda Turner

Please welcome my latest guest designer, Brenda Turner! Brenda will be sharing several projects using "Square Pegs" here and on her own blog over the next few weeks. Today she has a shabby chic valentine, keeping the stamping to a minimum using just the XO image.
She framed it up in a Labels Nine diecut, I like that she used this shape, it shows this image, even though it has right angles, isn't just for squares! ;) Her design uses the stamp like both the focal point and greeting and then she got to play around filling up the background with embossed layers of Basic Grey Bittersweet prints and Pure Luxury pinks using more die cuts.

Here is a little more about Brenda, in her own words:

FAVORITE TECHNIQUE:
My favorite techniques are sponging and coloring. It is rare that I make anything that doesn't have at least one if not both of these techniques.

COLORS/COLOR COMBO:
I love almost all colors, with blues and greens being my favorite. I tend to use earth tones a lot to.

A Year of Flowers, it is so fun to color and create groups of flowers. A Year of Flowers is my most used Gina K set.

I did a little stamping in the late nineties, but went back to work after being a stay at home mom. With work and being a wife and mother I had no time for stamping and had to give it up. Then about 3 years ago I was invited to a Stampin' Up party and I was bit by the stamping bug in a big way.

I GET MY INSPIRATION FROM:
Mostly other paper crafters. I enjoy looking at blogs and the SplitCoast Stampers gallery. My favorite place for inspiration is StampTV, the gallery there is full of the most amazing creations.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS I’VE LEARNED ABOUT STAMPING/CARDMAKING ARE:
To have fun.

I would love to be published some day. Of course I would need to submit before that can happen.

My biggest accomplishment was making Center Stage for StampTV. I was so happy and honored to be picked and I had the best time. I was also on the design team for Pile It On last year. I choose to step down from that position at the end of last year.

I love the challenges on StampTV. I will do some other challenges if one strikes me, but mostly I stick with the StampTV ones.

"Square Pegs" Blog Hop: Fuzzy Wuzzy Hoodies

I always melt when I see kids in little pajamas or coats or costumes that have ears: well, check out these little "Square Pegs" cuties, and so easy to make!

"Hip to Be Square" is stamped directly onto Basic Grey Lemonade DP and the border is colored in with a pink Copic. To make the faces, I stamped the baby face from "Hip to be Square" twice onto Blush Blossom and punched with a 1 1/4" circle punch, then to make the "ear hoodies" I punched a 1" inch circle out of Innocent Pink and Creamy Caramel, then put my 1 1/4" circle punch over the cut out round window and punch again so I had a "circle in a circle", see pic below. (I don't think I ever noticed that 1 1/4" in there before I took this pic, LOL!) I glued these over the blush punch outs so the little faces peek out, then just add ears! (from "Square Pegs") Insides of the ears are paper pieced with the same DP. You can also just layer a smaller punched face over the hood, but the way I did it here really makes the face seem like it's inside, KWIM? The heart is punched with the Extra Jumbo marvy Scalloped Heart Punch. Card base made with a Scalloped Sqaure Nestabilitie, button in the middle is from the Romance Collection.
Peekaboo! TIP: the button is tied with a little strip of CS, those little slivers you trim off with your paper cutter when you're cropping are great for that! :)

Mosaic Monday: Chic, PINK Inspiration!

Today's card was inspired by a little thumbnail in an email I received (advertising trendy artwork for sale), of a poster hanging in a beautiful modern bedroom with a gorgeous black bedframe, piled high with back and white floral printed pillows and HOT pink sheets, all of this against a crisp white wall. Well, I could see this card in my head immediately!

Simply stamp the "Inspiration Mosaic" grid onto Pure Luxury White and the new Passionate Pink CS, then cut out two of the sections from the pink to lay over the white. Before adhering these pieces, use Post-it notes to mask off two sections of the grid and stamp the flower from "Square Pegs" into the panes to make this black and white pattern. I am SO excited about this new flower image to make my own pretty, funky floral backgrounds in any colors I want! Stamp this again and punch out the Extra Jumbo flower punch from Marvy and layer onto a Super Jumbo flower punched from Black Onyx. I colored in one small section with a Black Copic but wanted to leave plenty of white space so left the other panes as is. Add the greeting and row of dots to the corner, run a black marker around the edge of your white mat to give it a border, and then layer onto a Passionate Pink base. Don't these colors just sizzle???

Wee Girly Tee

Today I have a "Wee Tees" sample using the "Square Pegs" set: after stamping my Onesie in Memento Black, I stamped the XO image all over it to make this super sweet hugs and kisses pattern and then simply stamped the heart over it. I popped it up onto a die cut Innocent Pink Scalloped Rectangle, and added little dots of Inkssential white pen to the border.

Cardbase is white glossy, the Swiss Dot Cuttlebugging in this glossy finish looks like a hundred little pearls, so girly! last add some white ribbon and a romance button, and it's done!

Celebrate with Cupcakes

Sweet weekend treat!
I stamped my "Square Pegs" cupcake in Vivid Coffee Bean and Brick, getting the lighter cocoa and pink shades by stamping off to make more cupcakes in a snap! I added the little hearts on top, then cut them out o layer over the XO border I stamped on a piece of Basic Grey Porcelain DP (basically a pink sheet with bleeding watercolor effects on it, very pretty!) and adding the word "celebrate" below the popped up trimmed heart. I kissed the heart sprinkles onto the heart before stamping to match. You can't see it very well in the pic, but I added a dot of Sakura Glaze Pen onto all the little hearts and chips, adds the little bit of shine the card needs and makes the sprinkles very lifelike! :)

Base is the new Innocent Pink and the Chocolate Kiss background I left smooth and unstamped, like silky smooth chocolate! I could eat this color combo up!!

Pop Top Can Tutorial

Here is a project I shared at the party that I promised to come back and share more details and pics for: a pop top can full of get well goodies! All you need are a pop top can and smooth edge can opener, I got this one from Pampered Chef.* It is a great can opener to have, not having to worry about cutting yourself or your precious little kids fingers on a jagged edge! After taking off the BOTTOM lid, I removed all the contents, washed the can and removed the label. Now it is ready to alter, don't throw out that lid, because you're going to glue it back on!

Although I took some liberties on the design to make it prettier, I intentionally made the top of the can red (the new Lipstick Red, cuttlebugged with Victoria) and framed up my soup bowl to look like a packaging label, referencing a can of Campbell's Soup, of course to go with my soup bowl image! The bowl is paper pieced with the same DP as on the bottom of the can, Basic Grey Junebug, doesn't that pattern look so elegant on the china bowl? I put a punched border of Black Onyx in between the two papers. That gorgeous border around the image and sentiment is from the new StampTV Kit "Organize It!" and I just love how this looks around a single image and greeting from "Square Pegs"! I colored it with Lionet Gold Copic.

After decorating you. re ready to stuff it with goodies! I put kisses and tea bags in mine. It is best to choose things that are individually wrapped if possible to keep the contents fresh and prevent a mess. Then you just glue the bottom back on and let it dry over night with a strong glue like super glue, E-6000, etc. Leave it bottom up and perhaps put something heavy on top of it. Hot glue might work also, if it does, let me know!

Last I added some of the gold lined black organdy ribbon around the pop top, it looks prettier and makes it easier to grab onto the top to pull it up.

Here is a closeup of the label. I actually cut out the middle of the bowl where the soup would be colored it in with Lionet Gold Copic, which I also used on the border, and then added the small strip of bowl above it with my Quickie glue pen. Instead of trying to snip around the steam, I just colored that part in with my white Inkssentials pen. I added a little shadow below the bowl onto the dish right over the pattern (this really adds a lot of depth to your paper piecing, try it!)and underneath it with C-3 Cool Gray Copic.

These pop top cans are such a fun and inexpensive way to present a gift, and later the can can be re-purposed as a pretty pencil holder. You might want to put another label on the back with a get well recipe or message to further personalize it. I will be back with more projects with this image, it's one of my favorite in the set, and not just for soup! :)

* if you are looking for a GREAT Pampered Chef Consultant (or interested in becoming one), I'd like to recommend our dear friend Ana Lewis. My husband has know her since college and she already involved with Pampered Chef when I met her in 1997 (has a huge downline and earns the dream vacation every year), and has four children of her own, three of which she home schools, so she REALLY knows about juggling a family, home, career and still have time to make wonderful meals for the family while feeling pampered in the kitchen! A wonderful tip she had for me when she sold me on this can opener years ago (before I even had kids!) was to create a mini pantry so to speak of assorted emptied cans for her daughter's little play kitchen! She had stacks of empty fruit cocktail, tomato sauce and soup cans she was able to pretend going to the grocery store and use to "make dinner", so cute! You can find Ana's website here.

Button Up!

This was a fun and quick card to make, using my new button stamp from "Square Pegs" on a Kraft base and a hodgepodge of real ones from the neutrals and new Gina K Romance Assortment! I started by stamping a random border with the button image in Memento Tuxedo Black and Versamark (difficult to see in this pic but I embossed the lighter ones, great to have that realistic shine and texture!) and then adhered the real buttons to create a collage using pop dots and glue dots. Last I added sime faux stitched over the button holes with my white Inkssentials and black glaze pens, the greeting and "free" pierced some little curvy trails in between to add more whimsy. Edges of card are rubbed with Cream White to soften the look. TIP: Don't have the color buttons you want? Stamp the button image and punch out with different size circles (or even a small squre!) to create some new buttons!

Square Pegs Tip Sheet

Here are just a few tips to get you started on "Square Pegs" once your set arrives, I know I have more ideas for these images than I have listed here, but just haven't had time to get them all added and I didn't want to delay putting this up (plus there'll be more surprises when you see me do some unexpected things with them on the blog!) ;)

Square Pegs is a set that instantly gives a stamper images and greetings for the full year of holidays. The mix of bold and line art images allows for any stamping technique, so whether you want to color, stamp something quick with bold color, or do favorite techniques like kissing, it's all here. The images can be used in an elemental way to create a scene or larger image, or used separately, making a smaller focal point, just punch and go. They also make adorable themed stamped backgrounds. This is a perfect stand alone, but an absolutely essential add-on to Hip to Be Square! You will love framing all these new images and all the extended options this set will give you!

Cutting tips: The images have been lined up over a sentiment that naturally coordinates with it, you can leave these together when you cut to save time or trim them apart when you want to mix and match.



The small words are perfect on little tags, fit almost any small punch, and are perfect stamped into a little corner where you need a little something or make a statement but don't want to add a large greeting. The clean classic font works well on all cards, and matches "Hip to Be Square" so have fun mixing these sentiments together!


Heart: fits the Scalloped Marvy heart punch(yellow) leaving a nice border all around.

Leaf: make quick patterned backgrounds. Try tracing over the veins with a darker color before stamping or rolling the edges to create dimension and Fall colors.

Balloon: Pop up and cord, string or curling wire for the end. Or just doodle your own!

Kiss patterns onto the heart before stamping or try rolling the bottom edge in a deeper color to create dimension.

Ovals: the ovals match to use as two steps, use separately, or fill in your outline with the solid stamp. stamp the outline first and then peek under to easily fill with the bold oval. Fun for creating colored eggs and faces and bodies for your animals.

Decorative bands: this fit across the ovals to make decorated eggs, but they also can be stamped onto the balloon and heart. kiss them directly onto the stamp or stamp as a second step.

The ones without the round ends can also be stamped in a row to create a patterned border.

Bunny and bear: Fun for Easter, Spring, kids and baby cards. The little face can make bears or bunnies. Stamp the face into the oval in the set, or the circle in "Hip to Be Square" to make rounder faces, or just stamp and punch. Punch out just the nose and mouth with a smaller circle and pop up onto the face to add dimension.

The ears are nicely spaced as is, but cutting them apart gives you the option of having ears perked or wide, and in the bunny's case both ears up, down, etc your choice. Stamp them upside down for drooping ears!

Stamp the ears separately in a circle like petals and add a button or circle punch to the middle to make small or large flowers.

Cut out the end of the flopping ear to use as paws.

Separate the whiskers if you want them wider on your bunny.
Stamp one side of the whiskers vertically repeatedly to make little tufts of grass to complete your scene and ground your images.

Flower: Fits the Marvy (yellow) flower punch.

Cupcake: Stamp the cupcake twice and pop up the top to add dimension to the icing. Cover with Crystal Lacquer for shine. Paper piece the top or bottom for a patterned cupcake or liner.

Stamp the hearts on top for sprinkles. Add candle for a birthday!

Tree: Embellish the stars with rhinestones etc.

Stamp in a row to make a border, then flip the cardstock and stamp the trees again into the triangular spaces in between for a cool geometric or quilt block effect.

Cut out five trees and arrange to create a star, or 6 to make a snowflake for a stunning holiday focal point!

XO block: stamp this out in rows to make hugs and kisses backgrounds or borders. Punch it out with a square punch and pop up or stamp into the Hip to Be Square panes. This image makes a nice spotlight/background for your images when you stamp one over it.

You can also use it to create patterns onto the bold images like balloon or flower "kissing" the x and o's onto them before stamping.

Button: Fits 1 1/4" circle punch perfectly, or use a 1 3/4" to leave a border or create a mat for it.

Kiss patterns onto the inked button before stamping for a decorated button.

Punch out with various size circle punches and pop up for buttons of different sizes in any color.

Stamp onto DP to look like a printed or fabric button.

Emboss for shine and smooth texture to make it look even more realistic.

Punch through the holes with a Cropodile to complete the illusion. String through thread or tie hemp knots.
