Buds and Vases Video

Here is that video on coloring a vase with water that I've been promising and you've been waiting for, thanks for your patience!  I hope you see how easy this is to do.  You could take more time and use more colors for even more realism, but I think this works perfectly for the style of the illustration and the whimsy of the flowers.  If you don't yet have the Buds and Vases set and love florals, I know you will enjoy all the variety it gives you with the different container stamps. It is still one of my favorite sets.

I must say, I was very tempted to plop in one of the *new* flowers form my new set releasing next Thursday from Gina K. Designs instead of the Journey of the Heart flowers on this card, but that would have been a bit premature!  Soon, I promise!

A few things I wish I'd said in the video:

Don't worry if you have some gaps in your image where you marker didn't hit every place. Just makes it look more artsy and stylized.  :)

Don't worry if you have an open space behind your flowers on the vase.  (See above!)  If that really bothers you, place your floral image over the vase when inking  so you can see exactly how much of the back of the vase to leave open/uncolored.  Know what I mean?

Poor Sadie, she wanted to help so badly.  My craft room is where all her "stuff" is, after all. But, it just wasn't going to happen. Although the video is short, you'd think from that pitiful crying I shut her out all day!  Next time, instead of her shutting her out, I might need to shut her in my bedroom with her "stuff" on the other side of the house.  Poor Sadie.

  1. Thanks for the great tutorial. New flowers eh? Another Stately set I hope. I'm waiting for Tennessee which is the iris, but I'm collecting and enjoying them all. Still having fun with Stampers Favorites.

  9. Hi Melanie, good video, fine stamping. I just have a problem with the "hanging flower" in the vase. The flowers have no base to stand-up. Only if the flowers are hanging over the edges of the vase, they can have this position.
But your tecnics are fine; I hope I coud do this.
    Congratulations.

  10. Hi Gerard, Thanks for writing! I see what you're saying, but hear me out :) It works for my eye because the red flower is leaning against the front rim (with the bottom of the stem again the ccurved back of the vase), and the blue flower is leaning against the back rim with the its end toward the front. Know what I mean?

  11. EXCELLENT teaching video, SO clear and easy to follow, and now I cannot wait to play!!! I may first have to buy the copics, I'll have to check, but I'd been wondering what shades of light blue would be best for shadows, and appreciate knowing that too. I'm such a beginner in coloring, and have such a desire to learn how to shade and highlight, and so it was just SO exciting to find this video today on Stamp TV!!! :) Any more on shading/highlighting with issues like light direction, anything at all--I am so eager to learn. So many people know this stuff but it's new to me, and I appreciate not just having to learn from what I see in a colored stamped image, but to learn step by step and even why just really was thrilling to me.

I've loved your work for years, and it was seeing your stamps used in I think "A Year Of Flowers" years ago that brought me to Gina K and yours were the first cling stamps I bought. And I've collected a number of your stamps over the years, not lately but I hope to again.

I LOVE Gina K card-stock too, I am extremely impressed with the CS quality and prefer it over other brands. Two of my all-time favorite colors disappeared though--green apple and vibrant violet, and I hope to see more colors to replace those, or perhaps it was just me who loved them so. I'm sure there were good reasons for taking them off the Gina K offerings. And there are other beautiful colors there, just those were the ones I liked most...

Thanks again for that amazing class, and I look forward to seeing your new set--soon! You've made my day at least, perhaps my week with this tutorial, loved it!!! Sorry this is so long--I guess I should write more often but wanted to express my gratitude to you, God has given you such great talent!!!

    Blessings to you, Joanne

  12. Joanne, you made my day. Thanks so much for all that wonderful feedback. I will do some videos with other coloring media also, I just know Copics are so popular among our customers and what I have come to prefer when I have the choice because of their blendability, vibrancy and variety of shades.

  13. I, too am very thankful for your tutorial. I was horrible at art as a kid (my teacher kept telling me that) so decided I could never do anything artistic. I panic and can't ever seem to get beyond the buying of all the tools!! You may be about to help me with my creativity block! Thank you and keep those videos coming!!

  15. I;m really sorry to hear you were told that, Patsy, although unfortunately I think it's very common/ I'm really thankful the first things you do in school are drawing, because if there had been a bigger focus on painting or sculpting, I probably would have developed an "I'm not that good at art" concept, too! And as a matter of fact, in high school , when there was less drawing and more experimental stuff, I lost my confidence and started doing less art. I believe and have read research to support children are natural artists with a wonderful sense of color, and composition and much needed lack of inhibition! It's as we start to get older and question how "good" things are compared to others or what we've been told that we become less open to taking risks, which is necessary to grow. Hugs!

  16. Hooray! It will be wonderful to have some weekly videos from you. It always helps so much to actually see how to get the end results on the cards. You do a wonderful job showing us and so in addition to Gina's videos I will be looking forward to your next one. Take care, Nana

  17. Great video! Poor Sadie ;). My cat had to get up and go search for the "other" cat!

  18. I loved this video! While I was watching it I kept hearing a cat crying. I have 11 cats and I thought it was one of them. I kept calling them and when none of them came into the room so I got up and went out in the kitchen to see who was crying but they all looked at me like, "What do you want". I even looked outside to see if one of the outside cats needed something. I came back to the video and heard the cat crying again so it donned on me that it was in the video. LOL

  19. I absolutely love this stamp set and your card is absolutely beautiful. I love the bold colors and the shading technique is great. This is a must have stamp set. Loved the meowing of the cat in the background. Thanks for sharing.
