Monkeyin' Around with Copics

Before today's coloring tutorial, here is another Pop Tone paper I will be using for my base, Orange Fizz. (I'm not going to try to match my coloring to it today, though, as I have a lot of earthy tones going on in my DP that i can pull from, a fun print from the Black Market Imported Rhythm pack.) :)


Orange is a really nice color when you find the right shades! (SU! Only Orange doesn't get a whole lot of play in my rotation LOL!, but I really like SU! Pumpkin Pie on my fall cards) Paper Temptress Orange Fizz is a bit softer and less "spicy Autumn", makes for happy spring and summer fun-in-the-sun cards.

So we're starting with the "Just So Hippy" monkey ( I've missed you, little guy!) he is stamped on Gina K Pure Luxury 80lb (the lighter weight today since I'll be mounting it on a mat, I don't have to worry about bleeding through here, save your 120 lb paper for card bases!) I filled in his skin areas with Copic E21. Often I leave just a hint of the top right side uncolored, like a white highlight.

Next I went in with a darker flesh tone E11 (not sure why this has a smaller number since they usually increase as they get darker, it looks darker to me LOL!) to the bottom of each of the areas. For the face, think of an imaginary line going from his forehead to his chin, and color the left half, this way that right side of his face is picking up the light. (okay, it's his right side, but it's confusing to say it that way LOL!)

Next I made a nice solid coat working in small circles with my E33. I left his tummy white for now because I want his little belly to be lighter.

Okay, I added a lot in this "step", sorry, I forgot to take a couple pics LOL! I added a brown that was just a bit lighter to the his back and undersides of his arms and legs and blended the flesh tone in for his tummy. (I could ahve done that earlier when I had one of my skin Copics out, nbut I thought I'd be using a different color at the time) I outlined a little shadow under him with the W-1 and used my colorless blender to take some ink away from his cheeks and added in this little pink for a becoming blush!

Now here he is on a gate fold card (score your 4 1/4"x 8 1/2"CS at 2 1/8" and 6 3/8", conveniently there's a little dot on these marks on the Scor-Pal!) ;) which uses three different sides of that Black Market DP. Notice anything different about him here?? Yup, I forgot when I stamped earlier to add his little tattoo! (and I am sorry to say I can't find my little flower stamp ANYWHERE! wahhh! fingers crossed is turns up) So I used the heart instead. :) I stamped it over the brown and blended out the color with my Colorless blender and filled in with pink the same way I did the cheeks. The Colorless Blender has so many uses besides blending and covering boo boos. If you start collecting Copics or only get a few this is one you "need"!

I got this fun little EK Success Flower punch at Hobby Lobby the other day, so I punched out a flower from the patterned paper for him to hold. This could have been "Valentine's Day", even with the orange, but I decided to birthday instead.

What animal should we do next? or, hands?? Actually, I have a get well card coming up too, that you're going to LOVE! and the Hand-in-Hand contest, eek! AND the next Gina K Designs release is only 9 days way did you see? I will be super busy making samples for this next week!! can't wait, can't wait!! any guesses about my set??

Playing with Purple: Paper, Ink, and Copic Tutorial

I'm trying lots of new purples today, papers and inks. here is a purple color comparison for you with a few Pop Tones shades and a few SU! shades to give you an idea of their true colors. I'll be using these two Paper Temptress purples in today's sample, Grape Jelly and Grapesicle. (I thought the Grapesicle might be similar to Almost Amethyst, but not when I pulled it out, Amethyst looked really BLUE! it's like an icy purple("Grapesicle", get it??)

Some new purple Copics today, too (all labeled with V for Violet, I found some nice shades to go with the Pop Tone purple papers (say that five times fast LOL!)

Today I stamped my flower from "A Year of Flowers" in , drumroll please, a PURPLE ink, Elegant Eggplant! I know, waterbased, such a rebel!!) But I don't worry about bleeding if I'm coloring with similar shades, and this will soften the look for my card. We'll see! ;) I quickly traced the lines in my petals with VO4, starting at the middle. working outwards. I left the tips white. Oh and BTW, I'm not blending everything today (I know, there I go again!!! it works with this image)

Here I colored in the middle with Y08. TIP: I added a little BV00 outside for a shadow(and over the V04), now that I have all these different pale Copic shades, it's really pretty to pick he very lightest shade you have of a color you are already working with for your shadow, here a very pale violet, instead of always using gray. (If using blues, pick a blue shadow, etc) In real life, in certain lights shadows really do take on a bit of the object's color, very cool...

Now I added my stems and leaf. I colored these in with one coat of YG23 and then went over the area I wanted to be darker with that same color, under the blossoms and the bottom of the leaf. You'll notice there is a deeper purple and yellow in the flowers, sorry I forgot to get that pic! I used Vo6, concentrating on the middle and worked only about half way out on the petals this time. I used YR23 on the underside of the flowers middle to keep the yellow center from looking so"flat".

Last I added G94 to those darker green areas and my BV00 around the stem and leaves. I liked it before, but adding the darker green just gives it more POP!

The base is embossed with CB Floral Fantasy and the mats use Labels One Nesties. I wrapped some SU! moss grosgrain around it and added a little tag using "love" from the "A Year of Flowers" set on an oval punched tag with a brad I colored to match with my YR23 Yellow Copic. The markers are looking a lot pinker here than IRL, does approximate the paper colors nicely. While I love my SU! coordinating cardstocks, I am really enjoying these new Paper Temptress colors, especially now that I have so many shades of Copics I want to play with that are quite different from SU!'s 48.

I enjoyed "breaking the rules" a little bit today! Hope it inspires you to try different things... if you like the way it looks in the end,... why not?? ;)

Cute Copic Cookie

First, here's my favorite "pink" from the Paper Temptress Pop Tones pack: Pink Lemonade, mmmm mmmm! I'm showing a comparison of it to Stampin' Up!'s Pretty in Pink. I suspect this softer pink is similar to SU! Pink Pirouette, but I don't have any to say for sure... I'm using it in today's sample, but I didn't originally intend to...you'll see! :) (we'll see who can wait, and who skips ahead! LOL!)

I started today's card by stamping my sandwich cookie from "Have a Cookie" in Memento Tuxedo Black on Gina K Pure Luxury 80 lb CS. I wanted to use a deep rich brown to match the Hot Fudge paper (see this post) and Copic E49 Dark Bark was just what I needed. I went just around the top left and right and sides of the cookie, these will be my darkest areas.

Next I used Dark Brown for the cookie front and top(color this larger area on top in small circles to keep from getting stroke marks), they blend so easily together. Then I added little dots of the Dark Bark again into each of the little scalloped sections around the rim at the bottom of the top and bottom wafer, makes them looks more rounded (click for closeup) Tip: I accidentally ran into the "filling" in a few places, but dark colors like these blend out surprisingly well when you apply the Colorless Blender Copic over them, so always apply that before scrapping it! If it's still not coming out, try your white opaque Inkssentials pen over the boo-boo. :)

Next I need to add my sentiment. I centered my round acrylic block on top of my image and lined up "You are one CUTE cookie" around it. Doing it this way it you will never have a problem with it being spaced the way you want! :)

I didn't get a pic of it, but I added my little crumbs stamp from the set to the lower right corner, filled in with brown and shadowed the crumbs and the cookie bottom with W-1, you can see it a bit through the block.

Now originally I was going to just keep this card "milk and cookies" brown and white, but since pink and chocolate are my favorite, and I was talking about a CUTE cookie, I decided to make it even cuter!

I added a little pink heart shaped brad to the top of my cookie, centering it in the little flourish on top, and made a "pink" cream filling with Copic R20(I really think Oreos should come this way, don't you?). I made a scalloped 4 inch card with my Nestabilitie from the Pink Lemonade CS. Brown mat is the Hot Fudge, and ribbon, although a perfect match for the pink CS, is from an unidentified source, I'm sorry LOL! It was wrapped around a bath item I got (you save that stuff, too, right?)

The finished card is so girly and sweet enough to eat (this would be a fun and easy card to send out to my "homegirls" for Valenitne's day!), excuse me while I go indulge in a little something myself, this post made me super snacky (and thirsty for some Pink Lemonade)!!

Here is one of Pop Tone offering I mentioned really liking during my blogaversary: Hot Fudge! If you follow my blog, you know I use a LOT of brown, it's one of my favorite colors, looks great with anything, and SU!'s Chocolate Chip has always been the darkest brown I've used. Not anymore! I was amazed to see how "reddish" Chocloate Chip appear next to this rich, dark brown. I'll still use Chocolate Chip (think "Milk Chocolate"!), but this Hot Fudge is like Dark Chocolate, for chocolate lovers! (and I looove me some chocolate!!) :)

I have a sample coming up with this paper I'm putting the finishing touches on (think "COOKIES"!) ;), as well as more color comparisons for you (gotta show it with some PINK!) ;)

Heartfelt Album Cover and Record Tutorial

I recently got Gina K's Heartfelt Hits and had to get it inky! This and a very special paper inspired me to create this album cover sleeve and record-shaped card!

I started with this Black Velvet paper from Paper Temptress. It does NOT feel like "velvet", though, the closest thing I can approximate it to is vinyl or rubber, it is that smooth! You really want to touch it, again and again, because it doesn't feel like paper at all! (Even my husband was intrigued!) The picture below helps shows the texture when compared to Basic Black. I know this sample doesn't look like Basic Black at all LOL! But when you shine a light on both to photograph, the light picks up all that texture on Basic Black (which you probably know is a very smooth paper!) but the Black Velvet just looks like solid color. The "shade" of the two blacks is really not that different.

The "vinyl" feel inspired me to try making a realistic-looking, "old school" record! I started by cutting out a large circle of it with Nestabilities, then stacking all my nested circles on top of that to emboss some grooves. TIP: Having so many dies in at once cut through some of the circles even though I was using my embossing stack, so if you recreate this I recommend taking a sheet or two of CS out of your embossing sandwich when you run this through to make sandwich not quite so thick and keep it from going all the way through, you can always add them back in if the embossing isn't coming out as deep as you want it. (I still used them all, of course!) just nested them back together and adhered to my card) :)

Next I took a folded piece of CS 4/14" square and placed the same large circle die I used to make my cover and overlapped the edge so they will be round but still attached at the side.

Here is how the card opens up. I really want my embossed Black Velvet front to be a perfect circle , so that's why I did these separately. :)

Next I attached my embossed circle to the front and made smaller "label" with a piece of paper Temptress Wild Cherry stamped with the "Heartfelt Hits I" couple in Memento Tuxedo Black ink. I attached the label so that the couple is going straight up and down lined up with the scored top, this way when the card is standing up they will going the right way!

I found the middle of my record with a ruler and made a dot with my Inkssentials pen as a guide for punching the hole.

Next I opened my card and punched out the white dot with my Cropodile Big Bite. These Big bites have a 6 inch reach, perfect for this type of project.

Here's my record! It looks a bit washed out but I wanted to make sure you could see how "groovy" it is, hee hee!

Next I stamped up a Wild Cherry paper with Memento ink and embossed the star bursts form Heartfelt hits with Silver EP. Using my Scor-Pal, I created a sleeve to slide the record into: bacially a piece of cardstock scored in half and attached at the sides with 1/8 " Scor-Tape, leaving an opening to slide the record in. (I made scored tabs to put the tape on on the sides to fold in so it would look more finished, but I forgot to take a pic, sorry! Either way will work!) :) The album cover is 4 1/2" square when folded, still small enough to fit in an A-2 envelope (to reveal a card in a card!) ;) I sponged the edges with Real Red ink and created my focal point with the Labels One Nestabilities and my "Hand-in-Hand" set. Hands are colored with Copics E00 and E21, tux with 100 Black and C-7, outlined with C-3 (I meant to grab C-1, oops! oh well) :)

When you open it, "I wanna hold your Hand!" from the "Hand-in-Hand" set is embossed inside, to go along with the hit record theme. You could also write in or print out your playlist of songs to go inside the record or on the back of the album. A record card would also be perfect to tuck into a mix CD for your sweetie on Valentine's Day!

PCP Sketch

Diana Gibbs is hosting the Papercraft Planet Sketch this week, she is using a sketch today she found originally from April 2005 Card Sketches copyright 2005 Becky Fleck. I can't wait to see what she makes, Diana puts a LOT of work into her beautiful cards! This is a fun one, how would YOU attach that band there? Three ribbons? Safety Pins? Fill in the blank? I'm thinking...will be back with a sample (okay, I actually just thought of something off the wall, I don't know if it will work or not, we'll see!!) This reminds me: would you be interested in playing along in an inspiration challenge with me each week? I see things daily that I think would inspire great cards, and one of my resolutions is to make sure to keep my camera with me because I've missed way too many "potentially great card moments" when I'm out and about! I'd share a pic here, my "paper interpretation" of it, and then sit back and wait to see what you all come up with LOL! Just a thought.... Maybe we need to do a trial run:)

My Tailgate or Yours?

Anyone had a lot of football on at their house the past week? Yeah, me too (although that's when I sneak away to my stamp room, so I haven't actually seen any of the games!) Thought I'd kick off the weekend with a little football inspiration and share one of my "Just So Sporty" designers Gabby Arriaza's samples uisng "Just So Sporty" and another sporty Gina K designs set, by Gina K herself: "My Tailgate or Yours"!

Is that cute what she did with Gina's two beer mugs, or what? I love all the details and layers she added here, the balck and silver DPs die cut with the nestabiliteis really bring out her bacl adn silver jersey, and "pigskin" Cuttlebugged football in the corner she created is to die for! "birthday" and "dad" are from "Just So Sporty", and "Happy" and "Super" are both from the "Little Tees" set. :) A "masculine" card if I ever saw one LOL!

I work at a special education school in a suburb of Detroit. I would love to be able to shower the staff there with cards showing them love and encouragement. Most of the teachers and support staff don't get the recognition they deserve for putting their all into working with all these students. Most of the students are severe in their disabilities. Being a parent also of a student that goes there I see both sides of the issue. My "parent" side wants to do something very special for them and this would really be a morale booster. Sentiment Challenge Winner!

Congratulations to Shannon Bracken, winner of my Sentiment Challenge, she created these two elegant samples using my "Say it With Flowers" set...the first uses Basic Grey Sugared and some layered Primas...

and this one Basic Grey Sultry! They're just so simple and elegant, worthy of framing!

And THEN , she got inspired by my last few posts and created this TRIFOLD inspired by my rose cutaway card AND my peekaboo from my tulip card!!

Fuzzy Wuzzy Copic Tutorial

I've been looking forward to Valentine-making season for quite awhile now because it is the perfect time to play with one of my very favorite animal sets "Cuddles and Hugs"! Today I'm using the koala, I got a TON of requests in the past couple days to see these little fellas colored, which has me thinking many of you are a little leery of coloring "fur", am I right? It's not hard, but different than that blended Copic look you've probably been trying to achieve for smooth objects. Let's start with a pic of the real thing, shall we? If you have access to the Internet, you have images, from multiple views and poses, of practically anything you need to color! This is really helpful for selecting shades and figuring out shadows.

Koala fur is a bit trickier than others because it has these white tipped dark hairs and then a downy white undercoat, giving you this salt and pepper effect. How to achieve it? Mine won't look exactly like this, but their coats will have a nice hairy texture when I'm done. :)

I'm only using 3 markers for this today: W-1, W-3, and W-5, three shades of Warm Gray. While some areas of the real koala have this warm "yellower" gray color, others are a cool silvery gray, which I have in my Copic collection, but these are better for my DP and CS I'll be using. First I'm putting in some feathered lines with W-3 in the areas that will eventually be the darkest so you can see where to concentrate the most color: around the ears, and the underside of their arms, legs and back. you make these little stokes quickly, with just the very tip of the brush tip end, it will make the finest of lines when you want.

Now I went and filled in the rest of the body with these same little strokes for hairs, working in on direction mainly on the limbs so the hair seems to follow the arm or leg down, and working outward on areas like the face starting from the eyes. be sure to leave room between the strokes so the white can show through. I left the tummy and chin area completely white.

Then I went over those first areas with W-5 to darken. (I could have just done that to begin with but it's easier to add dark than take away, just anted to make sure I was liking those colors! :)

Now I'm going in with my W-1, that palest gray in small circles to blend over the hairs, not the Colorless Blender. This will bring all the colors together and keep the fur from looking "patchy".

After blending, I went back in with just a few strokes of my W-5 again to make a few of the details (like the tufts at the ears) a little sharper. Aren't they huggable??

And here is my finished card! I used the So Sketchy December Square Card Sketch, Basic Grey Cupcake DP and Sahara Sand for my base, as you can see these warm grays look really nice with that CS.. I added a few halfback pearls, the threading water punch on my border to match the scallops on my heart punches. "Hugs and kisses" is also from the "Cuddles and Hugs" set.

If you don't have Copics, try coloring your koalas the way I did in this sample, and/or this sample!

Hand-in-Hand, Month after Month

Thank you all for your requests for coloring tutorials, hands and hippy, cuddly animals are at the top of my list of things to do LOL! Until I finish getting them photographed, I am blessed to be able to treat you to my third week of Guest Designer Allison Cope, and her lovely sample "A Friend", which uses "Hand-in-Hand" with "A Year of Flowers"...isn't this fabulous?!

I love how she added a few tiny wrinkles to the finger joints and nails, this makes this image work with the more realistically drawn and detailed flower, and are relatively simple to draw in (just copy hers LOL!) The colors and patterns she chose just lift me up!

"I loved the idea that you can take the double hand images from Melanie's "Hand-in-Hand" set and create a single hand to hold something. With the cool "friend" sentiment in the set, I knew I had to find something that meant friendship for my hand to hold. While browsing through all my Gina K. stamps I came across Melanie's "A Year of Flowers" and I knew the rose in the set would be perfect! After all, a yellow rose symbolizes friendship in the world of flowers!"

And it really touched my heart! And it had me wanting to do something with this set that wasn't tied to any one charity, organization or person, because I feel the set is universal.

So many of the images and greetings in "Hand-in-Hand" are perfect to support people needing it or show people in helping professions they are appreciated, so I would like to issue and host a challenge, which will be ongoing. I would love to have you all join me each month, beginning whenever you would like, participate every month if you choose, or only as often as you can/wish.


Each month I will post a new project with the "Hand-in-Hand" set here on my blog and some info about a different cause or need and an address where to send cards. Wow...how beautiful, your cyber friendship, as well as the gift you created! I have a lovely friend that introduced me to scrapping and stamping IRL that has been diagnosed with lupus...She has been a great support to me battling my own illness that has kept me at home for 3 months now...bringing supplies and stamping here with me and helping look after my kids when I wasn't able, I am inspired to create something, hopefully this beautiful for her :)
